Somewhere in 2009, free wifi was introduced in Pudong Airport (PVG). I thought that was very welcome as the free internet then could be accessed just by the click of a button at your browser.
Just a few days ago, I was at the airport when I tried to use the free wifi. I was surprised to know that to access the free wifi now, you actually need to key in your mobile phone number, afterwhich a password would be sent to you.
I thought that is absolutely redundant as it incurs overseas SMS charges for travellers and/or in the unlikely event that your phone has run of out power or you forgot to bring your phone, you could not access the free wifi.
Anyway, I tried this twice on my two flights to and from Pudong Airport. First time round, I did not receive the SMS at all, which meant that I could not access the wifi. Second time round, the password arrived...only 24 hours later !
I ended up not using the wifi at all. Why fix something that ain't broke?
